BOOK REVIEW: The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West

Hey guys! Hope you're enjoying Wednesday- I certainly am! Proof:
Anyways, today I'm going to be reviewing The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West. I read this in regards to my previous post, which listed all the books on my TBR list for summer!
Let's get into it!

Goodreads blurb + cover:

18660447
That cover 'tho!! ♥_♥
When Gia Montgomery's boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she'd been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend—two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley.

The problem is that days after prom, it's not the real Bradley she's thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn't even know. But tracking him down doesn't mean they're done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend's graduation party—three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.

Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.

Teeny backstory: I have read a previously read some of Kasie West's Pivot Point. I loved it but..I'm too embarrassed to say why I only read about three quarters of it..
Fine I'll tell you: I lost my paperback copy -_- AND I'm pretty sure there's a galactic black hole in my room where things go missing.

This book was, in a word...AMAZING!
It follows the popular girl at school called Gia (you know the type: perfect family, older brother, clique of her popular friends) who attends prom but her date, Bradley (a college guy) dumps her. Why? Because he says she's selfish and only cares about how she looks to her friends, which is..kinda true. Anyways, I don't wanna retell the story, but she met this dude in the parking lot and asked him to pretend to be Bradley. You may or may not be thinking, wth? BUT she has this frenemy called Jules- you know the type- who's evil and constantly out for her but Gia's other friends don't see the problem with Jules.

So the story was overall awesome and moved at the same pace- see I thought, after prom, it would go downhill because how was Kasie West gonna make them meet when they went to different schools? But, much to my relief and happiness, it turned out well!

BTW/FYI→ It was written in first person (Gia's) and past tense.

One of the many splendid things I enjoyed about this novel was that the kiss- and relationship, for that matter- between Gia and...okay, I'm gonna call the male protagonist 'Fill-In Bradley' because for real, the hype built up for the reveal of his name had me on the edge of my seat (btw, it was worth it!). The kiss/relationship between Gia and Fill-In Bradley was not forced, which I loved and it happened naturally and it was phenomenal.

One of the only things I didn't really like about this novel was the stereotypes. If you're a regular here (I heart you!), you know that I kinda mention stereotypes often. Stereotypes work with this novel but to an extent. For example, Gia having busy parents and/or actually saying to someone in her year at school 'Do I know you?' What I didn't like was that Bec (Fill-In Bradley's sister) was essentially goth and her and her friends were teased- I kinda saw that coming. And Fill-In Bradley wore glasses and this was received in a surprised manner by Jules because Gia doesn't normally go for glasses guys ?! That part itched me a bit, but I guess we can blame society for that one. Also, he had that stereotypical 'geeky' appearance: drama major, longish hair, those types of T-shirts..

But the overall story was fun, light and totally a-mazing so it makes up for those teeny cons.

Long story short...
Would I read it again?
YASS!!
Would I recommend it?
Yepp! Definitely. You, read it now, links below~!
Would I be caught wandering (and being saved by the book guy) in this world in my dreams?
Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes!!

~Buy it, buy it, buy it~
Characters
Gia~ Gia was a really cool main character and I enjoyed being in her shoes. Contrary to my earlier thoughts, I actually never got annoyed by her and her 'rich girl' attitude ('cause she wasn't that bad!)
Fill-In Bradley~ Was SUCH A COOL GUY! I'm even thinking of comparing him to Augustus Waters..
I just loved his witty comebacks and OMG I loved when he remembered stuff Gia said and used them.
Bec~ Bec was a really rad character. She's probably my fave- she played Cupid and IDK her sayings were just amazing. E.g..
''What are we angry about again?'' ''My brother.'' She raised her fist in the air. ''Totally with you. Carry on.'' ''So he called this morning, not to apologize but to tell me I wasn't supposed to be at the stupid ceremony.'' ''He did not.'' ''He did.'' ''That jerk''
Claire~ She was Gia's BFF whom will be roommates with Gia in college. Until there is a...disagreement between them. She was an okay character
Laney &...I for the life of me cannot remember the other's name~ Were not very significant. I feel like they had no impact on the storyline but I feel like they were there to show how they follow the leader ?
Bradley~ The real Bradley seemed to show his true colours afterwards and they were not very nice.
Drew~ Drew was Gia's brother and I couldn't figure him out..did he care or not? Idk, he was hot and cold and had a huuggee impact on the climax.
MY FAVOURITE QUOTES
*These are not ALL of my fave quotes because I forgot to highlight throughout reading :/ What can I say? Too engulfed in reading lol :)
  • 'They kept everything inside. I kept everything inside. ''Scream''.
  • “Chin up. There are other fish in the sea. It's a big ocean. Sometimes we need to catch and release a few before we find the keeper.”
  • I took a deep breath and screamed. She smiled. ''You have a lot of work to do but that was a good start. Now let's scream at your brother.''
  • “We rarely find a depth by looking inside of ourselves for it. Depth is found in what we can learn from the people and things around us. Everyone, everything, has a story, Gia. When you learn those stories, you learn experiences that fill you up, that expand your understanding. You add layers to your soul.”
  • “How is selfworth measured today? By the amount of likes a post gets, by how many friends we collect, by how many retweets we accumulate? Do we even know what we really think until we post our thoughts online and let others tell us if they are worthy?”  I totally got West's point in this point of the story so kudos :D
  • ''Do you need me to drive to UCLA and beat him up?'' I raised my eyebrows. ''You're right, he's way too big for me. I'll have your brother do it.''

Orphan Queen
18081228Wilhelmina has a hundred identities.

She is a princess. When the Indigo Kingdom conquered her homeland, Wilhelmina and other orphaned children of nobility were taken to Skyvale, the Indigo Kingdom’s capital. Ten years later, they are the Ospreys, experts at stealth and theft. With them, Wilhelmina means to take back her throne.

She is a spy. Wil and her best friend, Melanie, infiltrate Skyvale Palace to study their foes. They assume the identities of nobles from a wraith-fallen kingdom, but enemies fill the palace, and Melanie’s behavior grows suspicious. With Osprey missions becoming increasingly dangerous and their leader more unstable, Wil can’t trust anyone.

She is a threat. Wraith is the toxic by-product of magic, and for a century using magic has been forbidden. Still the wraith pours across the continent, reshaping the land and animals into fresh horrors. Soon it will reach the Indigo Kingdom. Wilhelmina’s magic might be the key to stopping the wraith, but if the vigilante Black Knife discovers Wil’s magic, she will vanish like all the others.

Jodi Meadows introduces a vivid new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, dangerous magic, and one girl’s battle to reclaim her place in the world.

The Start of Me and You
22429350Following her pitch-perfect debut Open Road Summer, Emery Lord pens another gorgeous story of best friends, new love, & second chances.

Brimming with heartfelt relationships and authentic high-school dynamicsThe Start of Me and You proves that it’s never too late for second chances.

It’s been a year since it happened—when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for two years, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school . . . and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her—the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club—simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live?

Made You Up
17661416Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to be—sometimes, there really is someone out to get you. Made You Up tells the story of Alex, a high school senior unable to tell the difference between real life and delusion. This is a compelling and provoking literary debut that will appeal to fans of Wes Anderson, Silver Linings Playbook, and Liar.

Alex fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8-Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She’s pretty optimistic about her chances until classes begin, and she runs into Miles. Didn't she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She’s not prepared for normal.

Funny, provoking, and ultimately moving, this debut novel featuring the quintessential unreliable narrator will have readers turning the pages and trying to figure out what is real and what is made up.

Vendetta
24638201When it comes to revenge, love is a dangerous complication. With a fierce rivalry raging between two warring families, falling in love is the deadliest thing Sophie could do. An epic debut set outside modern-day Chicago.

When five brothers move into the abandoned mansion in her neighbourhood, Sophie Gracewell's life changes forever. Irresistibly drawn to bad boy Nicoli, Sophie finds herself falling into a criminal underworld governed by powerful families. As the boys' dark secrets begin to come to light, Sophie is confronted with stinging truths about her own family, too. She must choose between two warring dynasties - the one she was born into, and the one she is falling in love with. When she does, blood will spill and hearts will break.

Poison Princess
13450339She could save the world—or destroy it.

Sixteen-year-old Evangeline "Evie" Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they're still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can't do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can't totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

Who can Evie trust?

As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it's not always clear who is on which side.

BOOK REVIEW: Hey, Let's Make a Band!: The Official 5SOS Book by 5 Seconds of Summer

Hey!
No, I'm not f*cking with you- I am reviewing a 5SOS book. Don't judge.
Backstory: I have developed a weird obsession with this band. IDK, one evening I stumbled upon [their song] Good Girls and then watched their VEVO Lift videos and they just seemed super chill and cool. Yes, I had heard of them before but I just pegged them as 'another 1D' (Yes, I'm kicking myself about that now).
If you see my Twitter favourites- or sometimes tweets (although, I like to keep my Tweets just book-y). But essentially, yes, I am 5SOS trash af. Lol. Let's get into it! :)

Goodreads summary + cover:
22752748This book is pretty much our official story so far. It really does only seem like last week we played our first gig in at the Annandale hotel in Sydney. Since then we’ve been given the opportunity to turn into the people and musicians we wanted to be.

The people who gave us the opportunity were the fans. So this book is like a thank you. We want everyone to know the story of how four western Sydney teenagers picked up their instruments and dreamt of being one of the biggest bands in the world. There’s also some embarrassing photos of us dicking around and some facts that some of us didn’t even know. So we hope you enjoy it!

Love cal, luke, ash and mike x

GENRE: Auto-biography
AUTHOR: 5 Seconds of Summer (Ashton Irwin, Calum Hood, Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford)
PUBLISHER: HarperCollins
SOURCE: Bought, hardback
PAGE NUMBER: 288
RELEASE DATE: October 9th 2014

So I went into WHSmith with my 5 (no pun intended!) year old cousin to purchase this book. I have perfectly valid reasoning: It's Reading Level One, ergo in the children's book section and I'm literally petrified of being judged. (PSA: Who else sometimes feels intimidated by the checkout people? Or people in general?) Lol, I should've just ordered it from Amazon -_-

Anyways, it was a light, fun read with lots of awesome pictures. HOWEVER, I kind of knew all of the bios beforehand (credit to all those Tumblr blogs, who include 5SOS facts. Explanation: I just wanted to get to know the band I'd sold my soul to! Rofl)
But yeah, like 99% of the knowledge was already known in my newbie-to-the-5SOSfam-brain, so the only new stuff was the pictures. Tbh I'm not complaining.
Also, I enjoyed the trivia factoids thingies..maybe cause I'm a sucker for trivia but they were generally fun! XD

Overall, it was kind of probably what I thought to expect from a book from a band. And that's cool. Hell, it made me love 'em even more.
And, I know for sure that on a gloomy day, I can flick threw it and it'll put a smile on my face :)

I hope you enjoyed this review! Lol it's not the type of book I normally review but I promised myself that this summer I will try new things (Disclaimer: Sarcasm cannot be achieved fully with the buffer that is a keyboard). But seriously, this band needs NOT be overlooked so easily.
Anyhoozle, I will see YOU next time.
Remember to comment, letting me know the following:

a). What's your fave 5SOS song? Mine is 'Wrapped Around Your Finger'

b). What's your favourite lyric? Mine is 'When you've got bigger plans that no one else understands, you've got a shot though

c). Are you a Michael girl? Or a Calum girl? Or an Ashton girl? Are ya a Luke girl? Or someone who loves all of them? I'm a Luke guurrlll :) (But I also switch to mutually loving them all!)

d). What's your favourite music video of 5SOS? Mine is...hmm...probably 'What I Like About You'

Byee!! :D
