BOOK REVIEW: The Fall by Rachel Higginson

In Ivy Pierce’s world, Greek mythology is reality. Sirens, like herself, use men for money, power and status; but she has the greatest gift of all. Stronger than any of the Siren’s before her, Ivy’s attraction alludes to a prophecy that could mean the rebirth of Greek gods and goddesses for our modern time.

The Fates believe she is the symbol of a new era. Her mother believes she is the key to ultimate power in their Greek circle. And Nix, her godfather and god of the sea, believes she belongs to him.

Ivy doesn’t want any part of her world or the people that demand so much of her. With the help of Ryder Sutton, her closest friend, she will fight against fate, against the expectations of her society and against the desires of a monster that will do anything to possess her.

And through it all she will deny her feelings for the one person she loves more than anything in order to protect him.

While her future crumbles around her, Ivy will go to extreme lengths to free herself from her glass prison—or drown trying.

It's currently 10:22am here in the UK and about 10 minutes ago, I completed The Fall by Rachel Higginson. I have no idea how long I completed the book in, and was absolutely oblivious to everything around me. This picture nicely sums me up:

It was my pleasure to read this book, and I am amazingly thankful to have read the second part of Ivy's story.

This book took me on an emotional roller-coaster like no other. I am numb from all the emotions and events that went on in this phenomenal book.
It was written in first person- Ivy's POV. And I'd like to take this moment to applaud the author for her descriptive descriptions (LOL) but seriously, my vocab and grammar have both improved immensely...and I got an A in English.

You gripped me in this book, Ms Higginson. (Thank you again for gifting it to me!) :D

The cover is stunning. In a way, it's like the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer covers. In a way not exactly. See, the protagonist, Ivy Pierce, is drowning. Drowning in her own thoughts, in her reality, in her fantasy (of having a free soul and getting away) and of everything; of a love that she knows will end badly; of a sister she loves but doesn't want to involve and a hot-and-cold mother.

I just really loved this book. I'm genuinely having difficulty putting my thoughts into words. I also hated it at times, too. For example, (SPOILER ALERT) two certain older girls were died. That killed me. I gasped for so long, so many times, placed a hand over my mouth and was on the verge of flooding my tears. It was heart-wrenching. But also eye-opening-I couldn't help to think that women all around the world go through issues like this...some-probably more-not as lucky as our protagonist.
And Nix, Nix Nix Nix,  I hate you!

Okay, okay, so the plot goes something like this:
Ivy is trying to not let Ryder fall in love with her (by admitting her love for him) and the two decide, very poorly, I might add, to be JUST FRIENDS. 'Very poorly' because they can't resist each other and make out a lot, which is sweet, but we all know it's gonna end badly. I wish it didn't, but you know...
So once they establish those three words, they become an item and devise multiple plans to run away together, from Nix and the Greek mythology and Ava (Ivy's mother) and everything. But you know, complications...
The Fates are these three witches (?), I think, and they are pretty prophetic. They are not keen of Ivy. Anyways, Nix is still...possessive of Ivy, in that sickening way and it's truly disgusting. But it was revealed that he has/had a motive all along: He was going to use Ivy, the Siren/key to become the king of Mount Olumpus. So Nix was a power-hungry old paedo that wanted power...who saw that coming?

These other three characters, taken from Greek mythology (we were also introduced to Aphrodite, Zeus, Hermes, and Ames and more) and they told Ivy a prophecy that involved Nix (AKA Poseidon, the god of oceans, who had the ability to drown people) never getting her because of someone else. The name was long and hard to remember- pardon me-but it began with a P if that helps -__-
Anyways, my inner Tumblr-mischievousness predicted, for a joke that it was Phoenix that would be the powerful one. But back to seriousness, I felt really sorry for Phoenix in this book. Oh and Chase. Argh, Ms Higginson.

It was brilliant, epic, enthralling, compelling and amazing. YOU. NEED. TO. READ. IT. Seriously.
All I know is that I cannot wait for The Heart (Siren series book #3). November, please come quick!!

MY FAVOURITE QUOTES:

I was so caught up in this book that I sort of forgot to highlight my fave quotes on my iPad...until the last five or so chapters. Thus, these quotes are my favourite from the last few chapters...hopefully giving nothing away" ;)

  • ''''Hush,'' he demanded.''
  • ''My blackened, shriveled heart surged with a love for both of these men.''
  • ''He was the guard and his words were the chains and I was nothing but a helpless victim to his cruelty.''
  • ''He would protect me until the end. Those thoughts should have fortified me, they could have encouraged me...but they did not. Instead, they broke me.''
  • ''I screamed again. Or maybe I hadn't stopped screaming. I couldn't remember.''
  • ''You control her body, but you do not own her.''
  • ''I felt my emotions expand in my body, spread their wings and consume me.''
  • ''I used the restroom because honestly, I hadn't gone in hours and I really had to pee and I didn't know when I'd get the chance again.''
  • ''There would come a time in my life that I would have to fight my demons, face them and destroy them. I couldn't run from them forever. I couldn't be truly free until I slayed them.''
SWOON MOMENT:
The most memorable, swoon-worthy moment in The Fall was probably when Ivy and Sloane were asking Phoenix questions about his loyalty, etc, then Ivy asked Exie and Sloane if they asked Ryder those questions...HE SAID THE SWEETEST THING EVERRRR. He said he wanted, and would help, her soul be free.

MUSIC THAT KEPT PLAYING IN MY HEAD FOR THIS BOOK:

☻ Isn't Rachel Higginson totally epic? Do you wanna give her a hug for creating this compelling and somewhat disturbing world?

So that's it from me...I'll just be here, not living life until November (AKA when The Heart releases).

BOOK REVIEW: Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins

Goodreads summary:
Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

GENRE: YA (Young Adult)
AUTHOR: Wendy Higgins
PUBLISHER: HarperTeen
SOURCE: Bought, paperback
PAGE NUMBER: 371
RELEASE DATE: April 30th 2013

I really enjoyed this book. Truly. We've got the the forbidden love of Anna and Kaidan; resulting in the oh-so-obvious sexual tension of them two (I love them!) and then the real action= the baddies.
The book is written beautifully-it's written in first person (Anna's POV).

So Anna needs to travel the world and the seven seas to look for other Nephs...and having just broke off their blissful yet dangerous romance, Anna and Kaidan no longer speak. So of course Kopano, the sweet and utterly loyal Neph, offers to accompany her. SPOILER ALERT: They end up making out in a closet and she gets hickeys! Sorry, couldn't keep that to myself. -_-
Ms Higgins, I really enjoyed the events in this book. From Kopano and Anna's travelling to Kai protecting Anna under the decks (I TOTALLY LOST IT!!)

Back to the events before the infamous closet-hickey segment, it's been two years since their romance and Anna still cannot get over Kai! Is that love, or what?
If I'm honest, I wasn't particularly fond of it being a whole two years..it just seemed to long, in my opinion. But I guess that just showed the depth, capacity and dynamic of  the love Anna had for Kaidan.

It was just...epic and then some. Nothing less, obviously more ;)

CHARACTERS:

Anna~She was a pleasant protagonist for me to read in the POV of. I enjoyed her attitude to tasks she would've thought of as impossible before. (PSSTTT...Katniss fans, you've got competition with my fave Southern gal, Anna Whitt. #pureheroism)

Kaidan~ He was still so damn hot and British (like me!) and hot and music-y and a whole lot of other swoon-worthy things.
One thing that got on my nerves a tad was that he sounded a bit like a pirate when he said 'mate'. Not all British folk talk like this..IDK, maybe I watch too much Once Upon A Time with Captain Hook ;p
But I could easily overlook it..coz it's Kai. Duh

The Neph crew~ Consists of Marna, Ginger, Blake and the other Neph teens (excluding Kope- he has a more major role in this novel, so I'll mention him below). They all had these amazing elements that seriously I applaud. I love the cynicism of Ginger, the sweetness of Marna and the swoon-worthy attributes of Blake.

Kopano~ Showed his loyalty and his sweetness and his swoon-worthy personality (Wendy Higgins creates a lot of amazing guys!). I sorta felt sorry for him at the end...*sniff*

#IsighforKai #IhopeforKope AND #IacheforBlake--Clearly I can't choose. And I won't! They are all my book boyfriends.

Patti~ I adore her. She's protective and awesome and totally badass.

Jay~ Jay is sweet and oblivious...he reminded me of a lost puppy at times! (SPOILER: My puppy grows up into an alpha doggy in the next book..due to...situations with a certain British twin).

There are a few more characters..but read to find and befriend/hate them!!

MY FAVOURITE QUOTES:

  • “Ready to s-snuggle?" he asked Kaidan, a slight clatter in his voice. Only Blake could joke on a night like this and get away with it.
Kaidan shook his head and undressed down to his boxers, too, the tension finally shedding away from his frame. "I swear, mate. If I feel something poke me in the back. . ."
Blake's laugh was dry. "I'm pretty sure my junk froze off, man, so don't worry.”
  • “Spend the night with me.” (...)
“I’m tired of living like I’m not alive.” He dropped his hands from my face to grip my shoulders. “I’m bloody sick to death of it. I want one night to be alive. With you.” He closed his eyes and leaned his forehead on mine.
“Please, Anna. One last night and we’ll go back to being safe again. I need this. I need you.”
  • “My girlfriend is a party girl angel who can kick some arse and cook.”
  • “Girl, all you have to do is say the word, and Mr. Lusty McLust a Lot here will be happy to whisper some dirty nothings in your ear.”
  • “I stole glances at Kaidan's bare skin while the others were busy talking. That's my boyfriend right there, I silently announced.”
  • “Anna... the night of the summit, when you were saved, it was the only time in my life I've thenked God for anything"
Those words. They would melt me over and over for all time”

BOOK REVIEW: Looking for Alaska by John Green

Goodreads summary:
Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (Fran├žois Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same.

A film has been confirmed: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3829868/
GENRE: YA (Young Adult)
AUTHOR: John Green
PUBLISHER: Speak
SOURCE: Bought, paperback
PAGE NUMBER: 256
RELEASE DATE: December 28th 2006

I will admit that the only reason I bought this book was because it was on offer at my local Waterstones, (I also got Insurgent).
I can sort of say that I had not researched it before I bought it, but with practically all of the quotes from this book on Tumblr, I guess I stand corrected.

So the book follows sixteen year old Miles who wants to go seek a 'Great Perhaps' and he's obsessed with the last words of tonnes of famous people (not reality stars- poets, authors, etc).
And Miles moves to a boarding school and meets his roommate Chip/'Colonel'. He gets of to a rough start but then befriends the Colonel's friends; Alaska and Tukumi. (Miles kinda falls for Alaska). Hard.

So I enjoyed the overall plot that happened in the novel- it was fun, witty and definitely mischievous. One thing that was a good-bad thing was Miles starting smoking when he hung out with the Colonel and his friends. Good because it outlined peer pressure and bad because Miles didn't even try to fight it. He was the only one that had money to buy cigarettes so decided to light them up..I get where he's coming from but still...
IDK, comment below, letting me know what you think.

Overall, aside from the ending...or the partition between the 'before' segment and the 'after' segment, I enjoyed the book.
It gave me a roller coaster of emotions (cry, laugh, smile, smirk, oh and that feeling or mixed feelings) which is one of the key qualities in all the best books.

Yeah, so I liked this book and really enjoyed John Green's writing. It was written in first person- Miles' POV. Granted, I partly bought this because of all the The Fault In Our Stars hype. (To read my TFiOS review, click here).
But it was genuinely a good book. I enjoyed it.

CHARACTERS:

Miles~ Miles was a character that I enjoyed..he was a bit weak at the beginning but evolved quickly in the 'after' part of the book. A joy, he was.

Alaska~ Alaska was an outspoken, confident, bad ass character. She represents all types of girl power and is actually a feminist (she refused to iron the Colonel's shirt for a date when he asked, because of him thinking girls can only do domestic chores).

Chip 'Colonel'~ The Colonel was a smart, hilarious character. He's my book, male doppelganger.

There are lots more characters, but read it and befriend them!!

MY FAVOURITE QUOTES:

  • “The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”
  • '' We need never be hopeless, because we can never be irreparably broken. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they get old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.”
  • “When I look at my room, I see a girl who loves books.”
  • “I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane.”
  • “I may die young, but at least I'll die smart.”
  • “What you must understand about me is that I’m a deeply unhappy person.”
  • “And then something invisible snapped insider her, and that which had come together commenced to fall apart.”

BOOK REVIEW: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Goodreads summary:
Mara Dyer believes life can't get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is.
She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong.

GENRE: YA (Young Adult),
AUTHOR: Michelle Hodkin
PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster
SOURCE: Bought, paperback
PAGE NUMBER: 466
RELEASE DATE: September 27th 2011

This book is one that I had been putting off reading for a while. I don't actually know why but all I know is now I deeply regret not reading it sooner. Like, holy crap!! This book is a whole other level of awesome and a whole other level of madness.

Let's start with the cover- exquisite. Absolutely exquisite. Aside from what I read on Michelle Hodkin's FAQ page on her website, I get the whole underwater theme of the cover (although there's no proper underwater scenes between the characters. ..Sorta)
My perception: (I'd consider myself a semi-professional, having spent a lot of time on Tumblr and WeHeartIt ;))
So our protagonist, Mara is metaphorically drowning. She could be drowning in her thoughts, in her memories, in her problems, whatever. But she's drowning and Noah, her saviour/boyfriend is holding her down. Thus not letting her float or come up, etc.
That's just my theory- what's yours? Comment below!

So the story was just twisted, thrilling, intense, creepy, witty, and a whole other load of oxymorons. It's everything.
It's also really complicated but I loved it (call me mad).

So it's written in Mara's POV and features flashbacks from 'the night of the accident' which is basically when her best friend and boyfriend died (or so she thought) and was also the victim of attempted rape at the hands of her boyfriend, Jude.
Trouble is, Mara hallucinates and sometimes memories and reality overlap so I admit, I was confused but then I was fine.

The whole dynamic of a girl who thinks she's fine but everyone does not is so compelling. I loved everything (mainly the banter between Mara and Noah). Well done, Ms Hodkin.

I loved all the characters (but let's be honest: Noah is just ❤__❤) and will go into further detail below.

CHARACTERS:

Mara Dyer~ Her name isn't really Mara Dyer; nobody knows...until the next book. I really enjoyed having the honor of being inside her crazy head throughout the novel. She was an amazing protagonist. Oh, and her language/profanity was EPIC. Loved it

Noah Shaw~ British, rich, bad ass, hot..everything I long for in a real person but have in a book boyfriend (did that even make sense? sorry!) But yeah, he's ultimately phenomenal and just, urgh, I can't...

Daniel~ Mara's older brother who is hilarious and his presence was cool. I liked his personality- streak of caring yet not too sucky.
I LOVE THE FACT THAT THIS PROTAGONIST ACTUALLY HAS SIBLINGS AS MOST DON'T.
Joseph~ Mara's younger brother who is cute and looks up to Mara.

There's tonnes more characters but read it to find and love them!

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
  • "But I need to go home," I said, my eyes meeting his. "My parents are going to kill me."
"Taken care of. You're at Sophie's house."
    I loved Sophie.
    "So I'm...staying here?"
    "Daniel's covering for you."
    I loved Daniel.
"Where's Katie?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
    "Eliza's house."
    I loved Eliza.
    "And your parents?" I asked.
    "Some charity thing."
    I loved charity.
"So why are you going to read when I'm right here?”
  • “Asscrown," I muttered under my breath as I headed to my next class. I wasn't proud of swearing at a complete stranger, no. but he started it.
Noah matched my pace. "Don't you mean 'assclown'?" He looked amused
"No," I said, louder this time. "I mean asscrown. The crown on top of the asshat that covers the asshole of the assclown. The very zenith in the hierarchy of asses," I said, as though I was reading from a dictionary of modern profanity.
  • "I guess you nailed me then.”
  • “Have you kissed many boys before?" he asked quietly.
His question brought my mind back into focus. I raised an eyebrow. "Boys? That's an assumption."
Noah laughed, the sound low and husky. "Girls, then?"
    "No."
"Not many girls? Or not many boys?"
"Neither," I said. Let him make of that what he would.
    "How many?"
    "Why—"
"I am taking away that word. You are no longer allowed to use it. How many?"
My cheeks flushed, but my voice was steady as I answered. "One."
At this, Noah leaned in impossibly closer, the slender muscles in his forearm flexing as he bent his elbow to bring himself nearer to me, almost touching. I was heady with the proximity of him and grew legitimately concerned that my heart might explode. Maybe Noah wasn't asking. Maybe I didn't mind. I closed my eyes and felt Noah's five o' clock graze my jaw, and the faintest whisper of his lips at my ear.
    "He was doing it wrong.”
  • "You're mistaking bitter animosity for heartfelt affection.”
  • ''I narrowed my eyes at him. "You're evil."
In response, Noah smiled, and raised his finger to gently tap the tip of my nose. "And you're mine," he said, then walked away.”
  • “Why do you always look like you just rolled out of bed?'
'Because usually I have.' And the way he raised his eye-brow at me made me blush.
    'Classy,' I said.”
  • “Fix me," I commanded him. "This thing, what I've done - there's something wrong with me, Noah. Fix it."
Noah's expression broke my heart as he brushed my hair from my face, and skimmed the line of my neck. "I can't"
"Why not?" I asked, my voice threatening to crack.
"Because," he said, "You're not broken.”

BOOK REVIEW: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Goodreads summary:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

GENRE: YA (Young Adult), Sci-fi
AUTHOR: Jennifer L Armentrout
PUBLISHER: Entangled Teen
SOURCE: Bought, paperback
PAGE NUMBER: 335
RELEASE DATE: May 8th 2012

I actually found this book by Googling 'books with characters like Patch' (from the Hush Hush saga), don't judge. I read about a range of books from a Goodreads discussion board but this one really captivated me (just by reading the summary. The thought of aliens was a little bit odd but compelling too. I thought, 'it's worth a shot- let's see how this works out'. So I read a sample on Amazon Kindle and HOLY FREAKING COW!!!!! It is probably in the top two of my favorite supernatural novels.
Why? Two words: Daemon Black. Need me to elaborate? Daemon and Katy.  Dayum!! Their relationship is just asdfghjkl and full of feels and epic and sooooo brilliantly structured. I mean, I love that at the beginning, Daemon is an arse, (which I loved FYI. Who's with me? Comment below!) but then his and Katy's relationship and trust evolves slowly-so it ain't rushed or forced- and it's amazing and hot!!

I cannot stress how amazing this book is. I just love, love, love, LOVE Daemon and adore, adore, adore ADORE Katy. Urgh, it's so good!
Also, how beautiful is the cover? Check out the fab new one here--> https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19081403-beginnings?from_search=true

My own version of the plot: (SPOILERS?)
Katy Swartz and her mother have moved to a new town after her father died of brain cancer. Katy is a somewhat shy yet confident book-worm/blogger, and moves into the house next to Daemon Black, and his sister, Dee. On their first encounter, Daemon be's, for lack of better word, mean to Katy but when she meets Dee in a supermarket, Dee is the opposite of Daemon and Katy notices there's something a little bit...odd about how people in town see the Blacks.
Long story short, Daemon annoys (flirts with?)  Katy whilst Dee befriends her. But it's not until Dee goes out of town and takes away Daemon's car keys that Daemon and Katy bond and she discovers what they really are; aliens.

Again, I loved the book...hell, I'll love it- and the sequels- to ruins It's witty, action-packed and full of romance- or flirtation- all at the same time. It also includes steretypes (new girl lives next door, friendly sister of the arrogant and hot guy, she goes to prom with a jerk, gets saved etc- I've discovered that the stereotypes are what make the book).

BONUS: I even got my sister addicted to this book...and Daemon ;) (Although I called dibs on him...since he is one of my book boyfriends)

CHARACTERS:

Katy Swartz~ I would totally be BFFs with this protagonist, had she been real...*sniff* But to me, she is real. But seriously, it was an honor to be in her perspective in this novel- she's so relatable!

Daemon Black~ Daemon, Daemon, Daemon...he is so bad-ass, epic and alien (which is now uber hot) and hot and everything. Eeekkk!!!! I love him. 'Nuff said. (Oh, if he isn't enough of a reason to read this, then I don't know what is).

Dee Swartz~ Dee is sweet, preppy, and really friendly. She's a joy.

Katy's mother~ Is a sweet widow that works as a nurse.

There's tonnes more amazing characters- but read it and see!

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:
  • “Why are you such an ass?" The words came out before I could think twice.
"Everyone has to excel at something, right?"
"Well, you're doing a great job.”
  • “I've always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect."
  • “I don't think he meant to kiss me," I said finally.
"What? Did he slip and fall on your mouth? Those things are known to happen.”
  • “The day my internet was hooked up was better than having a hot guy check out my butt and ask for my phone number.”
  • “How long have you been standing there?"
"Just long enough to see you give Daemon the middle finger."
    "He deserved it.”
  • “You don't look like an alien!' It seemed important to point that out.
He arched a brow. 'And what do aliens look like?'
'Not...not like you,' I sputtered. 'They aren't gorgeous--'
'You think I'm gorgeous?' He smiled.”
  • “Ash is going to kick your ass, Daemon."
Daemon's grin went up a notch. "Nah, she likes my ass too much for that.”
  • “I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst.”
  • “I've always avoided confrontation in the past, but this guy was flipping my bitch switch like nothing else.”
-- I like a lot of quotes from Obsidian...sorry -_-

BOOK REVIEW: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

Goodreads summary:
Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.
Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

I cannot really put into words how amazing this book is. It's definitely one of my favourite Nephilim/angel novels. I really enjoyed the characters introduced (Two words: Kaidan Rowe--> ❤_❤) and the events were epic.

Sweet Evil is written in first person- the POV of the female protagonist, Anna Whitt. Before I read this, I had not been familiar with the work of Ms Wendy Higgins...but now I jump up and down when I hear about a new project from her. (Oh, and her friendship with Jennifer L Armentrout, author of Obsidian/The Lux series is sooo fabulously sweet). :)

In case anyone is unaware, Kaidan Rowe is one of my favourite book boyfriends...we're both British and I can bang a simple drum beat; he plays for a band. He is uber hot. 'Nuff said. But seriously, read it and you'll fall for him. (Each time I read this book, I fall for him like it was the first time).

My own version of the plot: (SPOILERS?)
Anna Whitt is adopted by a women named Patti, and although they have a really close, loyal relationship, Anna goes on a few-day road trip with the ever so hot piece of eye candy...Kaidan Rowe. Turns out, they're both Nephilim, which are the children of angels and humans. They're destined to abide in Hell forever (ouch...or burn, rather ;)) Anna has a few gifts/abilities that she can't quite get the hang of.
Over the course of the road trip, Anna and Kaidan begin to grow close but they can't become an item because of the Dukes (all their fathers- especially Anna and Kaidan's fathers, who are very powerful) and their tasks. That's a poor way of describing it, so...
Kaidan= Lust= he has a new woman each night
Anna= Alcohol, etc= she must be intoxicated
Marna and Ginger= adultery= they can sense a relationship and break it up
and there's wayy more characters.

But it is a really interesting and compelling read that you will enjoy.

CHARACTERS:

Anna Whitt~ Anna Whitt is a Southern 'good girl' that has a gift or two. This character was quite fun, and I enjoyed having the opportunity to read in her shoes. She's great

Kaidan Rowe~ Let's not even go there...he's hot..and then some...just read it...trust me

Jay~ Jay is Anna's human bestie and he is also in a (somewhat struggling) band with his other friend, Greggory. He means well and is sweet and cool...I enjoyed when he called Anna 'dude' :D

Patti~ Patti was funny and overprotective and somewhat vulnerable due to her being human at the same time. I enjoyed her relationship with Anna.

Kope~ Kope was an interesting, somewhat complex character.

Blake~ Blake was the chill, cool, surfer-type character every novel needs.

Marna~ The nice British twin, who befriends Anna.

Ginger~ The...moody British twin that sorta hates Anna...and everyone except her sister and a selected few.

The Dukes~ Are all mean and controlling, except for Anna's father.

MY FAVOURITE QUOTE:
  • “Good gracious, he was sexy—a word that had not existed in my personal vocabulary until that moment. This guy was sexy like it was his job or something.” OH, THE IRONY ;)
  • “There was nothing healthy about desperately wanting something you couldn't have."
  • “Dear God!
I screamed and buried my face in my pillow.
"What?!" I heard him ask. "Did you see a roach?"
"Why are you naked?!" I did not dare to lift my red face.
"Huh. Is that all?" he asked. "I always sleep in the buff. I don't know how you can stand all that clothing."
"Unbelievable." I said, and without looking at him I pulled myself up and stomped to the bathroom.”
  • “Oh, dear Lord. I was in love with him. And there wasn’t a thing on earth, in heaven, or in hell that could have stopped me”
  • "You came across the country-"
"Shhh!" I warned him as people looked over. He lowered his voice to a shouted whisper.
"-with the son of the Duke of Lust?! Son of a-”
  • “I jumped and let out an embarrassing squeak when two hands came around my waist.
"Just me, luv," he said, close to my ear. "Aren't you the picture of domestication? Do you cook as well?”
